No Sew Carolers

1. Place your selected fabric under the tube. Fold over about an inch of the fabric from both the top and bottom edges so that the fabric is the exact height of the tube. 

2. Folding gives a neat, hem-like finish to the top and bottom edges of the fabric. The fabric should be long enough to wrap all the way around the tube with about an inch of overlap.

3. Make the face with a piece of card stock or thin cardboard. The width of the face should be slightly less than the width of the tube. 

4. Add facial features. Copy the expression I used or invent your own! Consider making a template so you'll have consistent face sizes if you make multiple carolers.

5. Wrap the fabric around the tube, then fold the face tab over the edge of the tube. Make sure the face is on the opposite side of the tube from where the fabric overlaps.

6. Tie a scarf around the tube to hold the face and fabric in place. Try using a pretty ribbon, fabric scrap, felt, or any other material that seems suitable.

7. Add a hat. I used a baby sock turned inside out with the toe area tucked into the sock, secured with a thin silver cord. You could also use a fabric scrap or felt, embellished in all sorts of ways. If the hat droops, try stuffing a few cotton balls inside.

8. Mittens. Again, make a template for consistency. If you use paper that is patterned on only one side, you'll need to distinguish between the right and left hands to ensure that the pattern faces outward.

9. Attach the mittens by carefully sliding them under the scarf. If the scarf is on tightly and you've made your mittens with long enough arms, everything will stay securely in place. Almost done!

10. Make a tiny book. I made mine by stacking a few pages, folding the set in half, and stapling along the crease to form a binding. You could decorate the cover with designs or words that make it look like a song book.
